A few questions about taking up smoking?
Well, not exactly taking it up, but the habit of it, ive had the odd one or 10 a night when ive had a drink since i was 15, but since about june 2009 ive became a fulltime smoker, this was not a conscious thought, i didnt think one day ooh i’ll start smoking i just sort of one say, in about september, realised i was smoking everyday, on my own, all day, it dawned upon me and i was actually disgusted.
Anyways. so, questions.
I have a cough, its really quite bad. I can not cough for hours, or i can cough constantly for ages and want to vomit, it doesnt matter, it changes, but its always present, has been for about 4 ro 5 weeks.
Will bronchial balsam ease this a little bit? its starting to get annoying tbh!
i dont really want to quit, i enjoy it. i know thats bad in a world so against it, but it gives me 5 minutes to myself and it gives me a nice safe feeling, but i would like to cut down to maybe 2 - 5 a day rather than some days having 2 or 3 and some days having 40, any tips on how to beat the cravings i get on certain days, like stressy days or when ive had a drink or im in the flat with all the other smokers with nothing better to do than have a tab?!!
thanks
(im 18 btw and since 16 is the legal age here im perfectly capable of smoking if i wish to so no bull sh it answers thanks)
I know you enjoy it.
I know you’ve heard all the scare stories.
I know many people have told you to stop and you just wish they would let you get on with what you want to do and mind their own business.
I know that it is 100% legal for you to smoke.
I know because I remember all of those things, and remember believing that it was OK, for me, and there would be plenty of time for me to stop at some future time if I felt the need to do, and stopping would not really be too difficult because it was "under control". And, anyway, I knew a guy, in his late 70s, who had smoked heavily all his life, and he was OK.
You already acknowledge "the cravings".
At 18 I was fell walking and rock climbing from Friday night through to Sunday evening, every weekend. I gave no second thought to long distance walking or extreme physical activity of any kind. But I did enjoy those fags.
I am now 64, and still "enjoy" fags and people tell me I look a lot younger than I am.
My local pub is less than 500 yards (since you are young, you might just as well assume I mean metres - they are not too far different at that kind of distance) from my front door, and a very nice place it is too.
It takes me a huge amount of effort, and a considerable amount of painfiul discomfort in my legs, to go for a pint. In the recent snows, it has been impossible (heck! I used to enjoy winter fell walking over snow covered fells!) except on a couple of occasions. On one of those occasions, I slipped and fell on my way home (no, I had had a drink or 3, but I was not drunk!) and it took me nearly 5 minutes to get back onto my feet because the pain in my legs (and not from the fall) stopped me from standing right back up.
As to fell walking (or anything else physical), forget it. It is simply out of the question. Even though I have friends older than myself (non smokers all) who still regularly go fell walking, I cannot join them.
All too often I am disgusted with myself even as I light yet another cigarette. But I still think I enjoy them - how crazy is that? And I regularly (several times a week) promise myself that "this will be the last packet".
PLEASE, I am not trying to bull you, or to preach, but STOP while you are (relatively) ahead. See your doctor if you find it hard, but PLEASE STOP.
Whatever you do, "Best of Luck", and I hope you enjoy a cigarette free future.

Whether you have 40 or 1 a day it really doesn’t matter. Your chances of getting lung disease or cancer is still the same. You may want to get that cough checked out right away.

Oh, for goodness sake grow up! You obviously know the many dangers of smoking and yet you are behaving in such an irresponsible way. You know how socially unacceptable it is and how unpleasant the smell and the passive smoking are for other people. You are experiencing a cough and cravings and yet you are choosing to carry on!! Give it up for the sake of your health! You are only 18, with the whole of your life in front of you. Let it be a healthy one!
If you have trouble giving it up, I can recommend you try hypnotherapy. It is very effective and I am told that one session is usually sufficient to cure you!

Paint/decorate your flat THEN promise yourself not to smoke in there again! We dont smoke in the house now and it cuts your smoking down bigtime! you seriously enjoy going out and having a few drags too…

I started smoking when I was about 14 and smoked 30-40 a day for years, I used to get bronchitis often. I gave up 11 years ago but have been left with mild asthma. When I was your age we weren’t as aware of the dangers of smoking as kids are now so really you have no excuse for it and to be honest you’re an idiot for starting something you know is going to cause you health problems. The only way you will get rid of the cough is to stop smoking otherwise get used to it.
My mum smoked for as long as I can remember and I never knew what it was like for her not to have a smokers cough, I grew up listening to it, she did give up a few years back but her asthma is so bad she starts coughing after walking 10 feet. But there is no point in telling you this as you don’t want to stop, so stop moaning about the cough and get used to it.
