 Lonesome Dove (1989)
IMDB rating: 9.00
Plot: Retired Texas Rangers Gus McRae and Woodrow Call are content to live out their remaining years in the tiny Texas town of Lonesome Dove. Then their old friend Jake comes to town, and tells them about the incredible oppurtunities for cattle ranching in Montana. Encouraged by this, Call convinces Gus and many other townspeople to go on a perilous cattle drive to Montana. Gus has another agenda though: his former sweetheart now lives in Nebraska, and he hopes for a second chance with her. As the drive goes on it takes on an epic scale, ultimately becoming what could well be called the central event in the lives of all involved.

Are there any good Western Films coming out anymore?
No country for old men, the horse whisperer, and brokeback mountain aren’t really westerns. I’m talking about John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, James Stewart, Lonesome Dove type stuff. I’m watching the end of brokeback mountain right now only because Mcmurtry wrote it, kinda weird. Not really diggin’ the accents. Funny how they keep hooking up with super hot chicks though.
A real western not, "brokeback mountain" or "boys don’t cry". Tombstone, Open Range, The Searchers, do people write them anymore?
I beg to differ, westerns are only boring to young children who need cgi and explosions throughout the movie nowadays. I’m in my 20’s and watched a 1930’s movie starring Jimmy Stewart the other day called Destry Rides Again and I was entertained. The Quick and the Dead is pretty entertaining. Young Guns movies were entertaining. I don’t know what the deal is in Hollywood. Bunch of unoriginal people there with remakes on their minds.
Yeah the Vampire stuff really needs to end.
I think if someone wants to make an Academy Award winning film nowadays, they make a western. It’s almost too easy, like the Tom Hanks mentally challenged award winning films. Unforgiven didn’t disappoint though. Dances with wolves was bad? I need to check that out again.
I agree with you that "Brokeback Mountain" and "Boys Don’t Cry" aren’t Westerns, because they are absolutely NOT.
Tough to say,the future for the Western looks bleak.Westerns might not have much place amid modern stupid fare, and plus, there’s a lot of negative perceptions about the cowboy and the West mostly thanks to "Brokeback…".Cowboys will be ignorantly synonymous with gay cowboys.Plus,Westerns are boring, let’s face it,aside from a handful of classics.
*Edit:"No Country…." is not a Western. It’s an overrated drama that was the worst Best Picture since "Dances with Wolves".Fact.
*Edit 2 days later:I’m not one such child.Never was.I was raised with appreciation for America’s fine history of cinema.I’ve seen almost all of Hollywood’s seminal works. You name it,I’ve probably seen it.
